I am currently learning about self-publishing and
distribution. For the purpose of this post I will focus on music. Self-Publishing
music means we are personally putting it out there, without the help of a large
established company, in order for people to hear it.
The article on www.squidoo.com, by Inna Tsv, provides great tips on doing the research required to make
educated decisions in this process. The article compares the websites we can
choose to partner for publishing our own sheet music. Additionally, there are
realistic tips on how to promote our music on the grassroots level. Increasing
our online presence is one of the most important tips.
I used to shy away from the music business, but with the
help of articles like this, I am more confident. I used to wonder about so many
details that choked me from putting things into action. Thanks to my recent
instructors, I realize there is so much more music business knowledge available
to me. The main thing that stands out to me from this article is “Whatever promotional tools you may choose to
apply, the key to your success is your MUSIC. So please, do write it well.”
I love the
encouragement to use my confidence in my music, as a key to my success,
especially when I know I write it well. My standard of good music allows me to
worry less about the creative aspect of my business. The logical aspect of the
business is less of a worry to me now as well. Gratefully, more people are
sharing their music business experiences and sharing the proper steps to
take to have music business success.
For example, David Byrne, founding member of American new
wave group Talking Heads, published a helpful article on taking music business into our own hands. He shares a little about where he
has been, where the music business was and where it is going. Self-publishing
is encouraged here too. I like his tip, “No single model will work for everyone. There's room for all of us.” I
know we all have to be aware of our competition out there, but as long as we
think there is room for all of us, we can all have our share of success.
I must admit that I am open to partnering with a major music
publishing company, if the opportunity arises. I just know that where I am
right now requires a strong foundation of knowledge and doing a few things on
my own. Cheers to preparation!
