Making A Comeback

As a Songwriter/ Co-Producer/ Composer, I am in need of a refreshed treasure of knowledge to make it in the music industry now. I say this because I stepped away from the industry to complete my Bachelor's Degree in Media Communications and to get grounded in my renewed relationship with God. Now I am looking forward to stepping back into the music industry to do what I love to do. I am grateful that I grew to understand I am on a journey and as Donna Dowless of XOXO Media Group said in a recent Full Sail University interview, "The journey is the key to understanding it all".

Well, I am on my way to making a comeback and the cool thing is that the music industry is making a comeback too. It is comforting to witness industry changes in a positive direction. In 2011, I was starting to get anxious while questioning how could I experience financial success, as a songwriter/ composer if the music I create doesn’t sell CDs like it would have before? I knew the digital sales would be an option, but I could not imagine much success with digital sales as the only option for income. I am relieved from the facts listed in this article by Michele Wilson-Morris from the Nielsen Reports Is The Music Industry Finally Making A Comeback?According to Michele, “overall music sales were up by 3.2% compared to 2010”. Michele also mentioned that, "total album sales increased for the first time since 2004 by a slim 1.3%".  I think this is cool and it encourages me that people will still by CDs for a while longer, allowing me to catch up to get my music available in digital markets.

It is also good to see that superstar Madonna is making her comeback as a performer. She is scheduled to entertain during halftime in the 2012 Superbowl. She shares her concerns and more in this interview video clip from 20/20 on ABC: Madonna-breaks controversy on 20/20

What stood out to me from this interview is that Madonna revealed her security as an artist. When asked about her reaction to hearing the song "Born This Way" by Lady Gaga which sounds like her song "Express Yourself", she explained how she took it as a compliment. Madonna could have reacted with a bad attitude, but she graciously acknowledged the connection of the two songs and refrained from putting down Lady Gaga.

As a songwriter, I wonder sometimes how I would react to someone copying a song I created. I know now that if that was to happen, I will imitate Madonna's attitude to take it as a compliment and keep moving forward.
